Louis van Gaal believes Ed Woodward’s Manchester United departure will help new boss Erik ten Hag

Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal thinks compatriot Erik ten Hag may have a better chance of succeeding at Manchester United following Ed Woodward’s departure.
Woodward’s decade-long stint as the Red Devils’ executive vice-chairman ended this year, bringing to a close one of the least successful eras in United’s recent history.
Van Gaal worked under Woodward during his time at Old Trafford from 2014 to 2016, and had previously insisted that Ten Hag should avoid joining Man Utd as they were a ‘commercial club’.
The 70-year-old was asked for his thoughts on Ten Hag’s chances of succeeding as United boss again recently, the former United boss noted that one significant backroom stage could make the difference in the outcome of both the Dutchmen’s respective tenures.
“There is now a new leadership,” he said. “It was Woodward and now it is Richard Arnold and that can make the difference. So we have to wait and see. He [Ten Hag] has a lot of confidence. So who am I to say something about that?”

Ten Hag has already ordered his new squad to return to Carrington for pre-season training on June 27 ahead of a long and gruelling first year at the helm. The Red Devils have not yet completed any signings since the Dutchman was appointed, but have seen Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata walk away for free.
The likes of Jurrien Timber, Alessandro Bastoni, Darwin Nunez and Marco Asensio have been linked with a move to Old Trafford. It s fascinating to see what approach Man United use in the transfer window – will they go for inexperienced but high potential wonderkids or more experienced personnel with big egos? Only time will tell.
