Liverpool drew 1-1 against Luton Town on Sunday. Despite the disappointing scoreline, football fans and Liverpool followers in particular were witness to a heartfelt moment on the pitch. It was reported last Saturday that Luis Diaz‘s parents were ‘kidnapped‘ in their hometown, Barrancas by men in armed motorbikes.
The player’s mother was found and rescued hours later by the authorities. However, his father is still missing as authorities are actively searching for the missing person. On the other hand, Luis Diaz‘s inclusion in the squad came as a surprise to many, given his father is still missing. The player was subbed on for Diogo Jota in the 83rd minute, as Liverpool were on the verge of a shock defeat.
In a moment of inspiration, Diaz clinched a last-gasp equalizer for the visitors through a sublime leaping header. His celebration touched hearts, when he raised his jersey to reveal a message for his missing father.
“Libertad para Papa” read the message on his shirt, which translates to “Freedom for my father,” in English, as he held up his shirt after an emotional goal. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was also seen holding the player in a tight embrace after the goal.
Organization ‘vows’ to release Luis Diaz’s father
As per the latest reports, there is reason to hope that the player’s father will be recovered soon. A week after the ‘abduction’, the player is set to be reunited with his father after a statement was issued by a guerrilla group in Colombia. The Colombian authorities blamed the rebel group ELN for the abduction and have initiated wide-scale searches for Díaz’s father.

However, the Liverpool star can breathe a sigh of relief after the ELN commander issued a statement.

He also added that “Lucho” (Diaz) is a symbol of Colombia, expressing his feelings about the player.
On Wednesday, the ELN informed the government about their involvement in the kidnapping. They didn’t know the victim was a famous football star’s father. This kidnapping now risks disrupting peace talks between the ELN and the Colombian President.
