Former RFEF President and Vice-president of UEFA, Luis Rubiales has been the center of speculation following the ‘kissgate’ scandal during the award ceremony of the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The President was seen kissing Spanish player Jenni Hermoso on the lips as she came up to receive her winner’s medal.

In light of recent events, Rubiales has now surprisingly announced his decision to resign as RFEF President. In a Piers Morgan World Exclusive PiersUncensored, the English presenter asked Rubiales, whether he is thinking of resigning amidst the “intense pressure from all sides.”

To this, the former RFEF President replied, “My decision is coming from my love for the Spanish Football Federation and my country. I know how it will affect everything if I do not step down. I don’t want any damage.” Further, while mentioning another reason for his decision, he says Spain will be running for the 2030 World Cup. So, it is wise to not attract any ill attention before that.

What Rubiales justifies as a moment of euphoria, celebration, and consensual embrace was not the same for Jenni Hermoso. As the World Cup champ openly said that she felt uncomfortable.

Spanish international and World Cup winner Alexia Putellas is set to attend the UEFA Football Board meeting. The Barcelona star will attend the meeting’s second edition in 2023, with the first one focusing on Men’s Football. As for the second edition, UEFA aims to build a systematic model to work on fundamental issues and needs in Women’s Football. It will focus on match calendars, refereeing, the rules of gameplay, and most importantly- player welfare.

Putellas had a brilliant season both at the club and National levels. Becoming World Champion with the Spain Women’s National Football Team while also being crowned the Ballon d’Or Féminin and the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year, that too, twice in a row. The 29-year-old is the captain of Barcelona Femení.

Attending as the Spanish representative following their World Cup win, Putellas will push UEFA to act more on player welfare in the context of the Rubiales incident. La Furia Roja has been quite vocal about the Rubiales-Hermoso incident. The players remained adamant that they would not play unless Luis Rubiales announced his resignation. Putellas even came out in support of her teammate and said that it’s over for Rubiales, opening a gateway of support and allegiance to Hermoso, earlier this month.
