The story continues as Luis Rubiales‘ mother, Ángeles Béjar, has decided to go on a hunger strike. Believing her son to be a victim of a ‘witch-hunt’, Ángeles has locked herself in the Church of Divina Pastora in her hometown of Motril.
Ángeles Béjar has locked herself inside the church alongside her sister. The ‘hunger strike’ is said to be carried out until a solution has been reached regarding her son. The mother has also publicly stated that she wants Jenni Hermoso to come out with the ‘truth’. “There is no sexual abuse when there is consent on both sides, as shown in the images,” she said. She would go on to describe her son as being ‘incapable of hurting anyone’. She ended her statement by ‘speaking and asking sympathy as a mother’. “It can happen to anyone,” she ends.
Some fans from the Ibero-America nations are not completely surprised by the mother’s actions. In certain cultures, the son is treated as the ‘prince’ of the household, and the women are kept in the backseat, to put it nicely. This idea is promoted usually by the female members or relatives of the family. With the apparent coddling of Luis Rubiales not only by his mother but also by the Spanish FA, their ‘harmless prince’ is seen as guilty around the globe apart from their own eyes.
Fans and players alike are glad that Luis Rubiales is being punished for his actions. Currently suspended by FIFA, people are hoping this proves a turning point for corrupt people in power.
Abuse in the women’s game
On the other side of the world, the nations of South Africa, Morocco, Zambia, and Nigeria faced their own issues. Issues ranging from low payment, low investment towards the team, and stories of s****l abuse plagued these nations prior to the World Cup. In general, 38% of CAF‘s women felt they were being underpaid. Both South Africa and Nigeria refused to train due to outstanding wage payments and the lack of bonuses offered. An SAFA ( South African Football Association) official dubbed the players as ‘traitors’ and ‘mercenaries’.
South Africa and Zambia boycotted training for other reasons as well. Poor training facilities. Terrible field maintenance meant the players had a higher chance of getting injured during training, a risk they were not willing to take. “The better fields are reserved for the men, women get lesser training time,” in the words of Zambian midfielder, Evarine Katongo.
Further, cases of s****l misconduct are rampant in the women’s game. FIFPro has stated that while the allegations are always shocking, it is not a surprise that such acts are common. Cases have already been made in Spain, Australia, the USA, Gabon, etc. The list can go on and on. FIFPro has also labeled football as a ‘high-risk environment’ for s****l misconduct. With many players coming from poor backgrounds, they all aim for their rags-to-riches fairytale. People in power abusing the helpless has been a common theme across many fields, and football is not an exception.
