Manchester City and PUMA plan to drop white shorts for women’s team due to period-related problems

In order to provide players greater confidence and comfort while on their periods, Manchester City Women will alter the color of their shorts beginning of the upcoming season. The Women’s Super League squad follows West Brom, Stoke, and Scottish team Livingston in announcing their own choices to do away with white shorts for their women’s teams recently.

Manchester City are the first and only WSL team to take such a step, and they did so because they wanted to foster an atmosphere where players could give their best effort.

The decision to discontinue using white shorts in the home, away, and third kits starting in the 2023–24 season was decided in response to player feedback, according to a joint statement from the club and the kit manufacturer PUMA.

“PUMA and Manchester City take pride in working closely with our players to support them and create the best possible environment for them to feel comfortable and perform at their highest level.

“As a result of player feedback and the underlying topic of women wanting to move away from wearing white shorts while on their periods, we have decided to implement changes to the products we offer to our female players.”

After a strong header from Khadija Shaw put the team ahead, Lauren Hemp raced on to Chloe Kelly’s cross and powered a header past goalkeeper Kirstie Levell. Shaw scored on the rebound after Alex Greenwood had his penalty shot saved. On her debut, Yui Hasegawa stroked a beautiful low shot into the corner to seal the victory.

“It was a vital win,” head coach Gareth Taylor said. “I’m pleased with the performance. More often than not the performance takes care of the result but not always.

“We went 1-0 up and could’ve got a couple more by half-time.

“We know that this team, even when you make changes, can really open up and score goals – particularly when you can bring on the likes of quick players at the top end of the pitch against an opposition who are probably flagging.”

Deyna Castellanos had two wonderful opportunities from corners for City early on, with the first one forcing a tremendous save from Leicester goalkeeper Levell and the second one flying just wide.

As Kelly sent a long-range attempt against the crossbar and Castellanos followed suit with a close-range attempt from inside the box, the opportunities simply kept coming. Due to City having 76% of the possession, Leicester was unable to register a single shot on goal and was forced to play the most of the game in their own half.
