Despite playing 287 fewer Premier League games than the Liverpool star, Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City has tied Steven Gerrard for the league lead in assists.
Kevin De Bruyne assisted Phil Foden on City’s third goal in a 3-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday. He also set up Jack Grealish for City’s first goal against Wolves in the first minute. The two against Wolves bring the Belgian midfielder’s total number of assists this Premier League season to six.
He now shares the same total as Gerrard, although having played only 217 games to get there. Gerrard, in contrast, had 92 assists in 504 appearances, all of which were for Liverpool.
Kevin De Bruyne will top the list if he stays fit and focused
With Dennis Bergkamp (94), Frank Lampard (102), Wayne Rooney (103), and Cesc Fabregas (111) all in his sights this season, De Bruyne is now just one behind City legend David Silva (93). The former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs is far ahead at the top of the all-time record with 162, so the 31-year-old may have to stay around for a few more years if he wants to be first.
Although De Bruyne plays for a much superior squad than Gerrard ever did for Liverpool, the former Chelsea player’s statistics are still astonishing. In the English Premier League, he is currently averaging nearly one assist per game, and with Haaland leading the line for City, his statistics will likely continue to rise in the years to come.
Will De Bruyne ultimately rank first in the Premier League for assists? That’s more than likely to happen if he stays healthy over the next three to four years.
