Manchester United begins its quest for a possible replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, Uruguayan youngster Darwin Nunez might take the striker’s place next season
After a dreadful season at Old Trafford, Manchester United might consider replacing Cristiano Ronaldo next season under Eric Ten Hag’s tenure as head coach. Manchester United hierarchies have started scouting for a potential striker as Ronaldo and Cavani’s future is doubtful. They have one potential striker from Lisbon on their hotlist as Portugal has always been a hub for potential stars.
Manchester United club’s scouts were present at the Champions League match between Liverpool and Benfica on Tuesday. They were present to take the talks further with Darwin Nunez for a possible move to the Red Devils. Nunez could well step into the shoes of Ronaldo and Cavani at Old Trafford.
In an interview with BT Sport, former English football player Michael Owen also lauded the Benefica star, claiming that he is “really quick and is in great shape.”
“He’s in great shape for starters. Nowadays, if you’re going to lead the line on your own you’ve got to have a real presence and he’s got that. He’s got size, he’s good in the air and he’s quick as well. He’s deceptively quick. Only 22 years old.” said Owen.
All you need to know about Cristiano Ronaldo’s possible replacement at Manchester United, Darwin Nunez
The young Uruguayan International might not know that clubs like Manchester United are looking forwards to having him. In the Champions League Round of 16, Benfica defeated Ajax with the help of Darwin Nunez’s header which put them into the quarter-finals. Nunez also scored the only goal in their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League Quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Darwin Nunez has 21 goals in 23 appearances for Benfica this season. Ronaldo, Cavani, and Rashford, all are having tough times at Manchester United, and releasing all the players will be difficult for the management.
Nunez plays at the left wing which is the possible position of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho. He could also start at the central striker position depending upon who departs from Old Trafford at the end of the season.
