Sergio Reguilon is all set to leave the Red Devils as the club is ready to trigger the break clause for his loan. He will return to his parent club, Tottenham Hotspurs, as soon as the loan is terminated.

Reguilon joined Manchester United in the summer transfer window as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, United’s left-backs, suffered long-term injuries. The club originally wanted to sign Marc Cucullera from Chelsea, but it didn’t go through as they included a break clause, much to Chelsea’s and Cucurella’s chagrin. They then moved their attention to Reguilon, who lost his spot to new signing Destiny Udogie.

Since joining United, he had 12 appearances, with only 2 clean sheets. For most of the season, Reguilon was always on the bench, being unused for 8 matches. He did miss out on three games after suffering an injury against Burnley. Sofyan Amrabat played at left back in his absence. David Ornstein of The Athletic said United were ready to trigger the clause as Shaw and Maliacia were all set to return.

Reguilon has not featured for Spurs in over 18 months. He last played for them in 2022, and since then has not been in the squad. In the 2022/23 season, he played for Atletico Madrid, but missed a majority of the season after suffering a hernia.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Reguilon will leave Spurs in January itself. The club don’t see him starting ahead of Udogie and believes he won’t get the playtime he wants. Many loan offers have come for him from clubs in the Premier League. Borussia Dortmund have also added him to their shortlist.

Manchester United’s plan for the January transfer window

Manchester United have a lot of deadwood in their squad they need to sell. At the same time, they have huge holes in their club which need to be filled. Erik Ten Hag’s future at the club will be highly dependent on who they sign in the window.

One of the club’s biggest aims will be to sell the trio of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Casemiro, who are either not performing or have a falling out with Ten Hag. The three also earn high wages, and by selling them United could reduce their wage bill. United have decided to not extend Varane’s contract as well, with it ending in June 2025.

United will be targeting a forward, a defensive midfielder and a center-back in the transfer window as well. Apart from Alejandro Garnacho, most of the forwards in the club are going through a tough time. Casemiro’s availability has been an issue and United only have two fit center backs as of now.
