Manchester United and Erik ten Hag cannot seem to escape their problems, as they faced Copenhagen F.C. in the UEFA Champions League. In one of the most thrilling matches of the group stage, a 10-man Manchester United ultimately fell to the home side. However, it was not until the 87th minute that the winner was in sight. Goals from Rasmus Højlund and Bruno Fernandes proved to be futile in the face of the home side.
United took the lead early on through Rasmus Højlund, after he was found unmarked by Scott McTominay in the 3rd minute. He secured a brace 25 minutes later, when a shot from Alejandro Garnacho tumbled into his path, making way for an easy tap-in. It was smooth sailing for United when, in the form of Marcus Rashford‘s red card, United’s game was derailed.
The home side took advantage of 10-man United, and two quickfire goals brought the game back to square one. Manchester United took the lead again through a Bruno Fernandes penalty in the 69th minute. However, Lukas Lerager and Roony Bardghji intervened to force a shock win for the home side, taking all 3 points to the disbelief of Erik ten Hag and his players.
Fans react to Manchester United’s misery at the hands of Copenhagen
Manchester United and their hopes to ensure qualification to the Round of 16 were dealt a significant blow on Wednesday. The game saw a red card, a penalty and a disallowed goal called in the away side’s favor. Following the full-time whistle, Erik ten Hag expressed his frustration at the refereeing decisions during their 4-3 defeat. He pointed fingers at “three tough decisions.”
Similarly, several fans also felt that they were done dirty by the referee. A fan commented that he thought the player did something special, pointing to Bruno Fernandes’ third goal for United. On the other hand, a fan vented frustration, saying that conceding four goals to Copenhagen is ridiculous. “I hope VAR is happy,” penned a fan who directed his rage at the refereeing. “Play like you mean it” said a fan, taking a sly dig at the United players. The loss leaves United last in Group A, with just 3 points in 4 games.
