Manchester United eyes Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic after move for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong stalls: Reports
Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s new manager, has seen his squad in action and has a good idea of where he needs to strengthen further in order to restore success to Old Trafford. Midfield is one of the key areas where the squad desperately needs reinforcements. Since his arrival, the Dutchman has urged the club to pursue and bring Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona to England.
Only Fred, Scott McTominay, and Donny van de Beek are capable of playing a deeper role in United’s current senior midfield. Christian Eriksen, a new signing, is more dangerous when deployed further forward, while James Garner has yet to catch the attention of the new manager.
The former Ajax manager sees his compatriot as crucial to his plans, and the Red Devils have already agreed a €85 million fee with the Catalan giants. However, due to the issue of deferred wages and the Dutch international’s reluctance to move to the Premier League, the impasse has continued with 14 days until United’s Premier League debut.
And now, according to Calciomercato, the Red Devils have identified Lazio playmaker Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as a possible replacement for the Dutchman. The Serbian midfielder has previously been linked with the Old Trafford club, and according to the latest report, Lazio may be ready to do a deal for an initial €70 million, a fee that is likely to be within United’s price range.
Why does Manchester United view SMS as a perfect alternative to FDJ?
Since his arrival in Italy in the summer of 2015, the Lazio playmaker has been outstanding. He has had such an impact that he has been named Lazio’s Player of the Year for the last two seasons in a row. United have renewed their interest in the player due to his ability to play as a box-to-box midfielder like De Jong.
The 27-year-old had an outstanding 2021-22 season, scoring 11 goals and assisting 12 times in 47 appearances across all competitions. He is widely regarded as one of the top midfield talents in Serie A, and he was named the league’s Best Midfielder three years ago. Arsenal has also been linked with the versatile midfielder in this transfer window.
He has nearly 300 club appearances and has twice won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana for the Rome-based club. However, his current contract with Le Aquile runs until 2024, so Lazio may look to cash in and get as much value as possible, or avoid losing the player for a low fee next season.
