Manchester United fans were overjoyed as David de Gea announced his departure from the club after his contract expired. The club had tabled a new offer to him but retracted it after the player agreed with the terms due to doubts about his capability to fit into Erik Ten Hag’s system. The Dutch manager is looking for a goalkeeper who is better with the ball on his feet.

The Spaniard joined Manchester United in 2011 for £17m from Atletico Madrid. He has appeared in 545 games, keeping a club record of 190 clean sheets. He is widely considered as a club legend. However, since Ten Hag’s appointment, people have been questioning whether he is the club’s first choice for the future.

De Gea became increasingly error prone last season, a few of which led to United’s elimination from the Europa League and their loss to rival Manchester City in the FA Cup finals. His ability on the ball has always been questionable and despite multiple attempts by the coaching staff, it has not improved. Therefore, both parties decided that it was time to move on.

While initially, United offered him a new contract with lower wages, they withdrew it after having further doubts about his role. The club is now poised to replace him with Inter Milan’s Andre Onana who worked with Ten Hag during his time at Ajax. One of his strengths lies in his comfort on the ball, which suits the manager’s tactics and will help United play a more attractive brand of football.
