Manchester United fined heavily after surrounding referee in FA Cup clash against Fulham

The Football Association fined Manchester United £65,000 after they accepted a charge relating to an altercation in the second half of last month’s 3-1 FA Cup quarter-final win versus Fulham at Old Trafford.

“The club admitted that it failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and do not behave in a way which is improper. Manchester United FC’s fine was imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a subsequent hearing.” United’s players surrounded referee Chris Kavanagh as they asked for a penalty after Willian handled Jadon Sancho’s shot on the line. At the time, no United players were reprimanded for their protests.

A few days after the incident, the club was charged. The way they appealed the decision and pleaded with Kavanagh to point to the spot was deemed inappropriate. The FA has now confirmed that United accepted the charge and will face financial penalties.

Following the FA Cup defeat at Manchester United, Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic was banned for eight games. Head coach Marco Silva will also be suspended from the sidelines for two games. The club was fined £40,000.

In addition to his two-match touchline ban, Silva has been fined £20,000 for his actions that resulted in his dismissal. The Fulham manager exited his technical area to complain and threw a water bottle at the assistant referee. He was fined an additional £20,000 for his post-match comments about Kavanagh. Fulham has been fined £40,000 for failing to control their players after the penalty was awarded.

The game, however, erupted in a dramatic 40-second period that saw manager Marco Silva, Mitrovic, and Willian sent off. They were protesting the decision to award United a penalty kick. Silva was sent off for his touchline protests during a VAR review. Willian handled the ball on the line, and was red carded as a result. Meanwhile, Mitrovic was charged with disorderly conduct and shoving referee Kavanagh.
