England manager Gareth Southgate quite literally said that he doesn’t have time for rumors linking him to Manchester United! The former England international and current head coach is currently engaged in international duty, leading his side to the 2024 Euros in Germany. While several rumors state that he is one of the candidates lined up to replace Erik ten Hag, Southgate certainly didn’t feel so.
As The Three Lions prepare to take on Brazil and Belgium in the span of four days, Southgate felt that the links to Manchester United were plainly ‘disrespectful’ to a manager’s position.
Two things; I'm the England manager, so I got one job basically. I have to try and deliver a European Championship. Secondly, Manchester United have a manager. I think it's completely disrespectful. I don't have time for that sort of thing.Gareth Southgate in a press conference ahead of the game vs Brazil
United’s current manager Erik ten Hag, was brought in from Ajax in May 2022, and ever since, has been under harsh scrutiny. From inconsistent displays to disputes with players and poor showings in the Champions League, fans are largely unimpressed with the gaffer. However, it cannot be denied that Southgate, among others, have been shortlisted by club management and INEOS.
Erik Ten Hag’s future safe till the end of the season
Manchester United have largely been inconsistent with their displays this season. From an early exit in the UCL to struggling for a European spot in the Premier League, things haven’t been easy for Erik Ten Hag and co. While many blamed the manger for his team’s inability to perform, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS management have decided to give the Dutchman time, at least until the end of the season.
Even though the Red Devils are currently sixth in the League table and nine points from the top four, there is reason for hope. Ten Hag’s team delivered a sublime 4-3 win against the mighty Liverpool under pressure. The FA Cup was the club’s only realistic prospect of lifting silverware this season, and the prospect remains alive, at least until the semi-final clash against Coventry City in late April.
Ratcliffe and his team are willing to involve Ten Hag to the maximum when it comes to transfers and squad building. The former Ajax manager still has a year left on his contract and new owner Ratcliffe knows that it will be no easy task to find his replacement. The club are in for a tough set of games, as they take on Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle United in their next five games.
