Many consider Erik ten Hag to be a dead man walking. The Dutchman has come under severe pressure time and again following his failure to inspire the club to a consistent pattern of victories. From Cesc Fabregas to Jadon Sancho, the manager has been criticized on numerous occasions in recent times. As per recent reports, the club are lining up potential replacements for the manager, in the event that he is relieved of his duties.
Man United’s most recent game in the Premier League ended in an embarrassing 3-1 defeat against their biggest rivals – Manchester City. Even though Ten Hag claimed that the game was a case of fine margins, many pointed out the flaws in his claim. In light of the the club’s recent state, it will not be a shocker if the Dutchman parts ways with the club this summer.
Current England National team manager Gareth Southgate, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Frank have all been shortlisted for the job at United. However, there has been no official statement regarding Ten Hag’s future, and with the season nearing it’s business end, a change mid-season is unlikely.
However, with a recurring pattern of managers being sacked from the Old Trafford dugout, many have started to question who is in fact, in the wrong.
Jose Mourinho ‘approves’ Gareth Southgate for United job
Legendary manager Jose Mourinho is no stranger to managing top teams across Europe. The Champions League winner is no stranger to Manchester United, with his two years at United making part of a legendary CV. The Portuguese led the Red Devils to three trophies during his two-year stay, concluding with the UEFA Europa League in 2016/17.
Amidst rumors of Gareth Southgate being brought in to replace Ten Hag at the club, the former recollected how Mourinho gave him the thumbs up for any managerial position.
I was 35 years old when I managed in the Premier League. I remember talking to Mourinho when he was at United, and he told me, 'When you've done the role you're in now, you'll be able to do anything really'. He's definitely right.Gareth Southgate on Jose Mourinho via Sky Sports
As of now, Southgate is under contract with the Three Lions, and will manage the side for the upcoming 2024 Euros. That being said, his contract is set to expire in December and with INEOS yet to make a decision on the Ten Hag situation, anything can happen in the coming months. As for Jose, the master tactician was let go by AS Roma and was replaced by club legend Daniele De Rossi.
