Manchester United crashed out of the UEFA Champions League as Bayern Munich beat them 1-0 in a must-win game for the home side. Adding insult to injury, Bayern Munich fans protested the ‘expensive’ ticketing at Old Trafford as they held up banners and sang chants. To the surprise of many, the act was received by applause and support from Manchester United fans as well, who chanted “Glazers out“.
Manchester United management Glazers have faced severe scrutiny over the last few years, with ticket prices being just one of the many reasons. Banners held up by fans of the Bayern contingent read “Twenty is plenty” and “50 £ Glazers’ overkill“. Amidst the scrutiny and criticism, Manchester United is ready to undergo a (25%) takeover by Sir Jim Ratcliffe. However, it is unclear whether ticket prices will be reduced or not.
The traveling fans of Bayern Munich boast one of the strongest average attendances in away games. The Germans made their presence felt as Manchester United succumbed to a solitary goal by Kingsley Coman.
Bayern fans also taunted the home side during the pre-match warm-up, chanting “You’re sh*t and you know you are“. They also got creative, and mocked the home fans, saying “Is this a library?” and “Football’s coming home“.
Manchester United crashed out of the UEFA Champions League
Manchester United have failed to win a must-win game against Bayern Munich and have been knocked out of Europe entirely. Erik ten Hag‘s managerial career at United falls into the balance as United fails to progress in the Champions League for the third time in the last 4 years. A ‘cagey’ match where either side did not manage more than 3 shots on target saw United succumb to a Kingsley Coman goal.
United and Bayern contested a very ‘gritty’ and physical game, where the home side only managed a single shot on target in 90 minutes. United’s ‘dagger in the heart’ came in the 70th minute. Harry Kane teed up Kingsley Coman inside the area, who finished emphatically past Andre Onana.
United could not muster a response to the same in the remaining 20 minutes. A fourth-placed finish in their group means that they won’t even qualify for the Europa League this season.
Following the game, Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel reacted emphatically. “This game was one of our best performances in the Champions League this season,” said Tuchel. Ten Hag urged the players to regroup and strive for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Moreover, he added that United wants to to the Champions League next season. “This is the level we want to play at“, added the Dutchman. He made sure that there were no ‘excuses’ made for his side’s poor showing against the German Champions.
