Following his midweek tunnel incident, Cristiano Ronaldo has been left off the Manchester United team to face Chelsea. Rio Ferdinand, a former Manchester United defender, claimed that while he does not support Cristiano Ronaldo’s antics after the victory against Tottenham, he can see why the player feels humiliated.

On Wednesday night, Cristiano Ronaldo denied entering the game against Antonio Conte‘s team, walking down the Old Trafford tunnel before the final whistle. Even though the Reds defeated Spurs 2-0 and tightened the distance on fourth-placed Chelsea, the late-game incident stole the show.

In response, United manager Erik ten Hag left Ronaldo out of his matchday squad for the match against Chelsea on Saturday night at Stamford Bridge. At Carrington, the former Real Madrid player also had to practice by himself. The 37-year-old singer has received harsh criticism for his midweek antics from a number of analysts and former players, some of whom he played with.

Speaking on BT Sport, Ferdinand said that if the incident had happened while the two were teammates at Old Trafford, he would have been “in a queue” to talk with the striker.

“I wouldn’t have been happy. In Ronaldo’s statement he mentioned how he would’ve handled things differently. Emotions can sometimes take it out of your control as you’re human,” said Ferdinand.

“I don’t think the communication has been as good as he wanted it, people say ‘you’re a player in the team’ but when you’re dealing with a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, like it or not, he’s Cristiano Ronaldo he’s one of the greatest footballers ever along with Messi.

“Sometimes they’re afforded a way of treatment a little bit different to everyone else, it was the same under Fergie, we had that communication about how the minutes are going to look and I think for the first time in his life that’s not upheld from the manager or the club.

He posted on Instagram: “As I’ve always done throughout my career, I try to live and play respectfully towards my colleagues, my adversaries and my coaches. That hasn’t changed. I haven’t changed. I’m the same person and the same professional that I’ve been for the last 20 years playing elite football, and respect has always played a very important role in my decision-making process.

“I started very young, the older and most experienced players examples were always very important to me. Therefore, later on, I’ve always tried to set the example myself for the youngsters that grew in all the teams that I’ve represented. Unfortunately that’s not always possible and sometimes the heat of the moment get’s the best of us.

“Right now, I just feel that I have to keep working hard in Carrington, support my teammates and be ready for everything in any given game. Giving in to the pressure is not an option. It never was. This is Manchester United, and united we must stand. Soon we’ll be together again.”
