Former Manchester United and Ajax goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has been airlifted to the hospital after suffering a stroke during his holiday in Spilt, Croatia. According to reports, he is under intensive care. The ex-CEO of Ajax was on his holiday in the seaside city.
Dutch outlet, De Telegraaf reported the incident which took place on Friday. It was later confirmed by the Eredivisie giants via Twitter, “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition. Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”
Van der Sar was one of the most decorated goalkeepers of his time. He won the Premier League title four times during his six-year stint at Manchester United. He also won the UEFA Champions League in 2008 with Man United and prior to that in 1995 with Ajax.
Following his retirement, Van de Sar returned to Ajax where he took up the role of chief executive in 2016. Although in 2023, he left the post after being on the club’s board for almost 11 years.
Van der Sar vacated his role as the CEO of his childhood club after his team recorded the worse ever finish since 2009 and failed to book a spot in the Champions League. He announced his departure via a tweet, “I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things. It doesn’t feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign.”

Edwin Van de Sar’s career at Manchester United in a nutshell
Van der Sar was already 35 when he came to Theatre of Dreams. Yet he was considered to be the best in his position by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, and the Dutchman was comfortable in filling the shoes of Peter Schmeichel.
The Dutch goalkeeper made 266 appearances for the Red Devils where he conceded 202 goals and kept 135 clean sheets. He also saw seven yellow cards during his stint at the Old Trafford stadium.
His trophy case with the club included four Premier League titles, one Champions League, one Fifa Club World Cup, four English English Super Cups, and two English League Cups. Van der Sar played his last game at the Old Trafford stadium in 2011 in their UCL clash against FC Barcelona. Following the match, he announced his retirement from professional football.
