Manchester United reaches a verbal agreement for €85 million deal with Barcelona star Frenkie De Jong

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United and Barcelona have reached an agreement on the transfer of Frenkie de Jong.
Romano tweeted this morning, “Manchester United have reached full agreement with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong, after further talks. Package worth €85m. Fee guaranteed around €75m plus add-ons. Personal terms, still the issue to be resolved as Frenkie’s priority is to stay at Barcelona.”
While it was already known that the main stumbling block was the personal terms, the fact that the package had not been agreed upon between the clubs was also an issue that needed to be addressed. According to reports this morning, despite president Joan Laporta’s assurances that he would do everything in his power to keep the player, Barcelona must sell to avoid violating Financial Fair Play regulations.
The only other option would be for the 25-year-old to take a significant pay cut, which he has indicated to the club that he is unwilling to do. De Jong’s agents are playing hardball with Barca, refusing to leave and refusing to agree to any pay cut.
Manchester United are confident that Frenkie De Jong will be joining the Red Devils
With €17 million in back pay owed and significant salary increases scheduled in his contract going forward, the player should expect the Catalans to pay up before agreeing to leave. It is inconceivable that his reported refusal to leave is due to this issue rather than a genuine refusal to join United.

His agent, Ali Dursun, has been in constant contact with the Red Devils in recent weeks, and his other clients include Tyrell Malacia, Donny van de Beek, and Victor Lindelof. Furthermore, it has been reported that United manager Erik ten Hag communicates with his former player on a daily basis.
United would not have progressed this far without being confident that the player is eager to join. With the clubs’ full agreement now in place, the onus is squarely on the player to negotiate a departure from Barça and a contract with United, who have reportedly given him a deadline of the end of the week to give his approval to the transfer.
