Manchester United set to play Atletico Madrid in a pre-season friendly in Norway
According to reports, Manchester United is set to take on Atletico Madrid in a pre-season friendly match at the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo, Norway on July 30, as confirmed by the English club on Thursday.
The Red Devils announced their new head coach weeks earlier with Eric ten Hag replacing Ralf Rangnick to take the manager’s seat at the Old Trafford from next season. The last time these two teams met was in the Champions League Round of 16 where Simeone’s men beat Manchester United to proceed to the competition’s quarter-final.
Manchester United’s football director said the pre-season matches help the team to combine and coordinate properly before the season starts and the players and staff get to play against such a tough opponent. The stadium will be full in Norway’s capital as the players will receive the support of their supporters which will be motivating and encouraging for a newly-built team.
“Pre-season is such an important part of the squad’s preparations for the season ahead. Our players and coaching staff will be relishing the opportunity to play against such a high-caliber opponent in Atletico Madrid, as well as the chance to perform in front of a full stadium of passionate Norwegian fans,” said Manchester United’s football director, John Murtaugh.
Manchester United will also play Liverpool in another pre-season friendly in July
The Red Devils didn’t have the best of seasons as they concluded their season with a loss finishing sixth in the league table which takes them to the Europa League next season.
They registered the lowest total in the premier league in their history as they managed 58 points in 38 games in the 2021/22 PL season. They will play against the runners-up, Liverpool, missing out on the trophy with just one point. Both Premier League teams will face each other on July 12 in Thailand to kick start their pre-season. United will go to Australia to play Melbourne Victory followed by Crystal Palace.
The Red Devils have a huge fanbase in the Norwegian country and their traveling fans will also be attending the game to see how the new team performs against a tough Spanish side. Norway has been a special venue for Manchester United as it will mark the 40th anniversary of the club’s Norwegian supporter’s club.
