35-year-old Fluminense fullback, Marcelo was left in tears after his boyhood club took a late lead in the Copa Libertadores final against Boca Juniors. A 99th-minute goal on the half-volley by John Kennedy gave Fluminese the upper hand during the first half of extra time and would eventually win them the game.

This trophy meant a lot to Marcelo as the player was earlier shown to have run towards his goalkeeper to celebrate when Fluminese played their semi-final matchup against Internacional. Subbed off in the 80th minute of the final, Marcelo was forced to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines as he was replaced by Diogo Barbosa. The score tied at 1-1 at the end of normal time. An incredible goal by John Kennedy had Marcelo on the verge of tears as his eyes reddened when the goal went in but he remained seated and calm on the bench.

The Copa Libertadores meant a lot to not only Marcelo but also to the club as Fluminense won the tournament for the first time in their history. An emotional 40-year-old, Felipe Melo was unable to hold back tears as he gave the post-match interview for Fluminense after securing his third Libertadores trophy. He said before ending his emotion-filled interview:

I want to thank God and this group of Fluminense and the players and this great day of glory to be champions. Fluminense campion America.

A win in the tournament will put Fluminense directly into the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup where they will be joined by the champions of the UEFA Champions League. The FIFA Club World Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia between the dates of 12th to 22nd December 2023.

Marcelo, who already has 4x Club World Cups to his name will also be looking for his 5th and will hope to tie with his former club, Real Madrid who also are on 5x Club World Cups.
