A part-time basketball player among other things is what fans had to say after after a clip of Barcelona’s left-back Marcos Alonso went viral. The Spanish footballer, despite being sidelined for the likes of Alejandro Balde and Joao Cancelo was seen in high spirits in Barcelona training. Benchwarmer or not, the Barcelona No.17 has a wand of a left foot, with which he has impressed audiences time and again.

Despite his contributions being limited to the touchline, his unbelievable trick shot has gone viral on football X. In the clip posted on Barcelona‘s offical X handle, Alonso attempted a ‘three-pointer’ though he spiced things up by using his foot to do so. His shot curved elegantly in the air before hitting the rim and falling into the net.

Marcos Alonso set to leave Barcelona after disappointing season

Barcelona brought in Marcos Alonso from Chelsea back in 2022 after the Spaniard terminated his contract with Chelsea. It was clear that Barca had big plans for the defender when they attached a €50 million release clause on the player following his signing.

His debut season fared relatively well, as he was deployed by Xavi Hernandez primarily as a left-back. He racked up a decent amount of minutes as Barcelona won the La Liga title, adding to the hopes that he might be a player set to play for several years at the club.

However, his second season proved to be the exact opposite, as the player fell out of favor with the boss. Injuries and falling down the pecking order means that Alonso has only played 299 minutes over seven games this season. Even though no concrete information surrounding Barcelona’s transfer targets have surfaced, it is clear that the club has to get rid of players taking up a significant place in the wage bill.

While big names like Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde and Raphinha have been noted as potential departures, deadwood like Alonso will also be shipped off in the summer in order to free up space for new players. The fact that Xavi opted to deploy Hector Font over Alonso against Atletico Madrid speaks volumes about Alonso’s importance to Xavi’s game-plan.
