Andre Onana isn’t living up to the hype around him. In Manchester United‘s late match clash against Wolves, striker Sasa Kalajdzic’s attempt header created a lot of problems for the new custodian. Consequently embroiling the controversies. Even PGMOL’S Jon Moss admitted that Wolverhampton was denied a ‘blatant penalty’. Wolves dominated United for most of the game before Varane’s 76th-minute header gave United the lead.
Match referee Simon Hooper halted the play and went to the touchline to check and review the incident but found nothing wrong. To Gary O’Neil‘s shock, the referee even showed the manager a yellow card for revolting against the decision. Hence the fans, as well as the media were very critical of the overall quality of the officiating. Right from the on-field referees to the VAR.
The Wolves boss also said he wasn’t surprised that the incident went against him. He cheekily blamed the venue and hinted at the officials’ favoritism for Manchester United in such situations. According to the whole of the away dugout, Onana had almost taken their striker’s head off with his fist. Irrespective of such a serious clash, the referees said they did not have sufficient evidence to penalize the goalkeeper.
However, referee Simon Hooper, video assistant referee Michael Sailsbury and assistant VAR Richard West have suffered the wrath. As they have been dropped from the second round of games for the Premier League. This comes after PGMOL apologizes to the Wolves boss. He appreciated the gesture as it was his first game in charge of the club since Julen Lopetegui‘s departure.
A look into Andre Onana’s dream move to Manchester United so far
Andre Onana is already making headlines with United, more so for all the negative reasons. If your new big-money signing gets chipped from the halfway line on his debut it is bound to become a social media meme. Given his great performances since his time at Ajax and his unforgettable UCL campaign in 2019. It is also notable that not many black keepers are prominent in the current era of modern football.
While the race of a player does not have a role in talent, Onana has certainly been one player at the head of controversies. As he was also banned for a brief period for doping. Since then, he has made a comeback, been a Champions League runner-up, and completed his dream move to United.
The Cameroonian keeper was exposed in a couple of pre-season games, first by his own full-back Diogo Dalot and then by center-back Harry Maguire. What caught the fans’ attention was his mentality to immediately call them out on their mistakes and demand a professional performance. While he has set his expectations high for his teammates, he will certainly have to live up to theirs now that the Premier League is well and truly on.
