Chelsea have been on a roll during the festive season. They have won every game in the past 2 weeks apart from their one loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club is currently struggling, battling it out in the middle of the table, but are now back to winning ways. They have finished the year with a 2-3 win over Luton Town.
Thanks to a brace by new signing Cole Palmer and a Noni Madueke strike, Chelsea were three goals up by the 70th minute. But the hosts fought back in the final 10 minutes, with Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo scoring in the 80th and 87th minute. Despite the last scare, The Blues managed to hold on to their lead and got all three points.
Despite the win, Chelsea defender Thiago Silva was unhappy as the team conceded two late goals. He looked disappointed and when the camera went on him, the Brazilian told them to move away from him, visibly frustrated.
When asked about Thiago Silva’s foul mood, Mauricio Pochettino said he was happy with the 39-year-old defender’s reaction. He further praised the veteran, saying he played like a 20-year-old and was happy with the experience he brought to the team.
Thiago is like this. Always moaning and never happy - but that's good! He's 39 and still playing like a 20-year-old. He brings his experience to the team and he is doing really well. It has been a big, big week. Next year we start in a positive way and it is a good feeling to finish 2023 in this way.Mauricio Pochettino to the press
Chelsea finished the year with a win, and Pochettino aims to start 2024 with a positive outlook. Their next game is the FA Cup fixture against Preston North End on 6th January.
Mauricio Pochettino publicly asks players to step up
It is no secret that Chelsea have some players that have just not been up to the standard. With the team struggling at 10th in the league, it looks like Todd Boely and the club have wasted their investment of over £1 billion. With Chelsea already in the market, Mauricio Pochettino has asked his players to step up.
I think we are going to discuss with the owner and the sporting director but it is going to be a decision from everywhere. I think at the moment, the most important thing is to work with our squad and our team. There are too many players that need to step up and be part of the squad and the team and be available.Mauricio Pochettino to TNT Sport
Chelsea have been one of the biggest spenders ever since Boehly and his consortium purchased the club. As of now, it looks like their spending ways won’t stop, with the club already linked to expensive players like Victor Osimhein and Ivan Toney. Pochettino says he wants to improve the players in the squad, but time will tell what Chelsea do.
