As the USWNT star, Megan Rapinoe hangs up her boots, the football World is saddened by the abrupt end to her final match. Rapinoe and OL Reign took on Gotham FC in the final of the National Women’s Soccer League final. To the dismay of fans and players alike, her final game was cut short just 3 minutes in due to an unlucky injury.

Megan Rapinoe is undoubtedly one of the most iconic names in women’s football. The 38-year-old’s illustrious career and exploits off the pitch earned her a big name in world football. Her efforts to ensure ‘equal pay’ for women, the 2019 World Cup win, and the kneeling show of support for Colin Kaepernick are just a few iconic moments in her career. However, as she stepped on the pitch for one last time, it was cut short.

The player was seen falling to the ground without contact as she tried to change direction. Moments later, Rapinoe was attended to by medical staff and teammates as she was reduced to tears.

In a heartbreaking moment, it was understood that Rapinoe would not be able to continue on the pitch, thereby calling time on an illustrious 17-year-long career to an end like this.

The crowd gave the player a standing ovation as Rapinoe made her way off the pitch after sustaining a ‘no contact’ injury. Moreover, a loss in the final also added sorrow to a sad close in the footballing world.

OL Reign battled Ali Krieger and Gotham FC for the NWSL title at the Snapdragon Stadium. Following Rapinoe’s injury, the home side went behind after Lynn Williams put Gotham ahead in the 24th minute. Rose Lavelle pulled the home side level just 5 minutes later, only for Esther Gonzalez to take the lead for the away side just before half-time.

Rapinoe saw herself fall on the losing side in the final professional game of her career. Despite the painful end to her career, she was in high spirits as usual. Talking to the press, she said:

Thank God I have a f***in deep sense of humor. But yeah it's obviously so devastating to go out so early in the final. 

Her illustrious career came to abrupt ends for both USWNT and OL Reign, but her legacy lives on, both as an icon of the game and as an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in sports.
