USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe is making news headlines yet again. This time due to a comment she made today in the post-match interview after getting knocked out by Sweden in the Round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup.
USWNT, four-time world champions, were surprisingly knocked out of the World Cup. As they were defeated by Sweden 5-4 on penalties. Kelly O’Hara, Sophia Smith, and Megan Rapinoe were the ones who let down their American fans. As they failed to convert their spot kicks in the penalty shootout. After the game Rapinoe was interviewed and her reply drew backlash from fans.
“This is a dark comedy, I missed a penalty. This is the balance to the beautiful side of the game,” she said in the post-match interview. “I feel really grateful and joyful and I know this is the end and that is sad. This is the only time I have been in one of these (losing on penalties at a World Cup) – it has been an honor.”
When she was asked about her favorite world cup memory, she replied ‘equal pay’. The comments made by Rapinoe added fuel to the disappointment of fans. Since they had already witnessed their team being knocked out in the round of 16.
Although it is not the first time the US Women’s Soccer Team is receiving so much heat. Similar emotions were observed to have emerged during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when the team suffered a loss to Canada in the semifinals
