On Saturday, Megan Rapinoe, the 38-year-old USWNT forward, announced her retirement from playing. With two Women’s World Cup wins, an Olympic Gold Medal, and club-level success, her career has been illustrious. Despite retiring, she promises to stay involved in women’s football for years to come.
Megan’s soccer journey hit a painful snag with a serious Achilles injury during OL Reign’s match against NY Gotham FC in the National Women’s Soccer League. After just six minutes on the field, she had to leave, ending her playing career abruptly. This setback, combined with her controversial ‘NO GOD’ statement online, added to the challenges. Gotham FC secured a 2-1 victory over OL Reign, denying Rapinoe an NWSL title.
Oh, you guys, you're not getting rid of me. Come on now, of course, I'll be around, and I can't wait for what's next... Banging this drum for a thousand years.Megan Rapinoe told PEOPLE
As a two-time Women’s World Cup winner with the USA, Megan Rapinoe has showcased her skills. Partnering with Carli Llyod and Alex Morgan, she played for teams like Chicago Red Stars, Seattle Sounders, and OL Reign. With 200+ appearances for the USA and 63 goals, she gained fame. Despite facing criticism for her outspoken stance on LGBTQA+ rights, Rapinoe remains a vocal advocate.
After her last game, she eagerly expressed interest in staying involved in women’s football, possibly as a coach. Seeking fan support for increased NWSL participation, Rapinoe praised the successful 2023 season and the league’s growth potential.
Despite emotional moments at her final press conference, she highlighted the NWSL’s global appeal with a new $60 million media deal. Rapinoe, wishing to continue with OL Reign, also has plans for a production company with partner Sue Bird. Losing Rapinoe and Ali Krieger to retirement adds a different vibe to this NWSL season.
Piers Morgan hits back at Megan Rapinoe over her comments on ‘God’
Megan Rapinoe has once again found herself being trolled by outspoken TV personality, Piers Morgan. Morgan has always been a harsh critic of the American player. He said that even God found Megan insanely smug and irritating, as a reply to her comments from her final match.
Megan Rapinoe suffered a severe injury in the NWSL final of the 2023 season, as her team OL Reign succumbed to a 2-1 loss to Gotham City, because of which she had to end her career on a sad note and thus claimed that God did not exist.
If there is God? Here is a proof that there isn't one.
The comment though did not sit well with a lot of people including Morgan, and she received a lot of criticism with many people calling her injury which was a non-contact one, an act of God, or a way of God’s punishment on her.
The English broadcaster took a dig at Rapinoe calling her a ‘pink-headed prima donna’, in an exclusive piece for NY Post.
I’d say it’s more like definitive proof that God does exist — and shares my view that this arrogant, pink-haired, self-promoting prima donna didn’t deserve the glorious send-off she so desperately craved.
Morgan had done the same after Rapinoe had announced her international retirement back in September. He called her the ‘most annoying athlete ever’, and called her performances too ordinary.
Morgan criticized Rapinoe’s views on transgender athletes shortly after her retirement as he questioned how the Women’s World Cup would be affected if a player like Lionel Messi transitioned and joined the American NWSL. However, Rapinoe accused some of being ‘transphobic’ for suggesting that she, as a transgender woman, occupied a spot that should go to a ‘real’ woman in the league.
