“Messi to win it all on his last dance?” – Twitter reacts as Argentina announce their 26-man squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup
Argentina’s 26-man World Cup squad ead by captain Lionel Messi, who is attempting to win the competition for the first time. Head coach Lionel Scaloni named Messi along five Premier League talents, including Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister, as he unveiled the team on Friday afternoon.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez looks likely to be the preferred first-choice stopper for Argentina. Rodrigo De Paul is a mainstay in the centre of the park, while Leandro Paredes also offers additional strength in midfield should Scaloni decide to mix and match. The likes of Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez offer excellent support to Messi and the attack is one area that Scaloni will not be too worried about.
Argentina is seeking to win the competition for the first time since 1986 after taking the title in the two editions prior, in 1978. If Messi were to take home football’s top honour on December 18 in Qatar, he would have won all of his career trophies.
