MLS Star, Matko Miljevic has his contract terminated amid allegations that the player signed up to play in the amateur leagues. The player was subsequently suspended after spitting and striking a player in the face.
Matko was under contract at CF Montreal after joining the MLS side from Argentinos Juniors. The former Boca Juniors trainee was upset about his lack of game time as the 22-year-old only played 123 minutes in eight appearances for the club in 2023. To prevent a lack of fitness due to his low game time the player registered to play in Ligue Québécoise de Soccer Calcetto – an amateur league- using a false name. His name was even found on the amateur competition’s website where he was registered as “B/semi-competitive”. This was obviously against the rules of the MLS.
The main story, however, is his actions. Matko was suspended after spitting and striking a player in the face in a game he was not involved in. The player was a spectator and somehow found a way to get himself suspended through his actions. “Matko will not be in training until everything is resolved,” CF Montreal head coach Hernan Losada stated. The player already had his contract running out in 2024. However, MLS released a statement where they stated, “Major League Soccer has terminated the contract of CF Montreal midfielder Matko Miljevic…violating his Standard Player Agreement”. Matko Miljevic’s career in the MLS is over.
The player managed 22 appearances for Montreal last season only scoring a single goal along with an assist.
What’s next for Matko Miljevic?
The player is still young, 22 and clubs abroad may look at the player as a possible reinforcement. The player had joined CF Montreal in 2021 after spending three years in Argentina’s top-flight. He scored 1 goal in six appearances for Argentinos Juniors before his eventual move to the US. While the MLS has made it clear that the player cannot rejoin the league, the player may look at options in his home country.
The player was a trainee at Boca Juniors and has even represented Argentina and the US at U-20 matches. Matko could also make a good second-choice player as he is the type of player who is good at set-pieces and also winning them as he often tackled a lot. He has a fairly disciplined record on the pitch only getting a yellow card twice in past eight games. His finishing and defensive contributions however leave much to be desired.
All in all the player may have to switch countries or play at a lower level if he is unsuccessful in finding a team.
