Mohamed Salah was at the center of Liverpool’s attack as they cruised to a 4-2 win against Newcastle at Anfield. However, it was not without difficulty that the Egyptian made his way into the top 10 leading goal-scorers in Premier League history on Monday. He missed a penalty in the first half and appeared to change his boots when he took to the pitch in the second half.
The Egyptian’s brace was pivotal as the Reds increased their lead at the top of the table to five points. His first came from a Darwin Nunez assist and his second came from the spot in the 86th minute. It is important to note that both goals came after he changed his boots at half-time. Former Liverpool player turned Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher asked Salah about the same, and his response was interesting to say the least.
The other boots, I had only trained with them yesterday. It's kind of not superstitious, but when I felt that it will play in my head, okay, out. Change of boots.
Salah said with a laugh. When Carragher jokingly tried to shift the blame onto the boots for the first-half penalty miss, Salah quickly corrected him and said it was not that.
I didn't want it playing in my head that I hadn't scored with these on yet. So I changed it, made my mind calm and focused on the game.
The forward is currently on 14 goals and 8 assists in the league as he will now be away on international duty for the upcoming AFCON. Interestingly, these stats have just come after 20 games and the Egyptian king leads both the lists of the league’s top goalscorers and top assisters this season so far. So, it is not a hidden secret that Jurgen Klopp and Co. will miss him.
Gary Neville – Red’s OWE Mohamed Salah a title race
Mohamed Salah bowed out of Premier League action for over a month as the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off on 14th January. However, he did not leave quietly, as he picked up right where he left off in 2023. A finish from close range and a penalty in the 86th minute meant that Salah equaled Erling Haaland‘s tally of 14 league goals this season. Even though Liverpool are table toppers, his absence for over a month may negatively impact their season.
Gary Neville expressed his concern in this regard and said that the club and Salah’s teammates must ensure that they’re in the title race when he returns. As the #11 leaves on International duty to represent Egypt, the weight of carrying the attack falls on the shoulders of Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, and Luis Diaz. While Salah has 14 goals to his name, Gakpo, Jota and Núñez share 13 between them.
They have to be at the top of the table when he returns so they can give Salah a chance to have a real go at the title.
Neville isn’t sure if Liverpool will stay in the title race, but he believes in Klopp’s ability to get results. He mentioned three players (Gakpo, Nunez, and Jota) as a factor for his doubts. Despite this, Liverpool is currently leading the table with a two-point advantage.
