On 10th January, Chelsea lost to Championship side Middlesborough in the first leg of the League Cup. Already not having a great season, this loss just added to their woes as they lost 1-0 in the Riverside Stadium. Ahead of their Premier League fixture with Fulham FC, Mauricio Pochettino revealed a player told him not to feel bad about the loss. The player told him that his previous team also lost in the Riverside stadium. Unfortunately, he was lying.
Pochettino claimed that Moises Caicedo told him his side lost to Middlesbrough in the stadium the previous season. He added that many PL teams lost there in cups, but Chelsea were still in the tie and would fight in the 2nd leg. Unfortunately for Pochettino, Brighton last lost in the Riverside Stadium in 2011. Eight years before Caicedo debuted.
In fact in Brighton’s trip to Middlesbrough in the previous season, the Ecuadorian midfielder had played the entire match in a 5-1 win in the FA Cup. The last time the Seagulls lost to them was in 2014 when the victors were last in the Premier League. The two teams will play the 2nd leg on 23rd January in Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea will attempt to make their way to the final.
Fans can’t believe Moises Caicedo lied about Brighton’s win
When Mauricio Pochettino told the press about Brighton’s “loss” to Middlesbrough, many fans couldn’t believe Moises Caicedo lied. Everyone on the internet had to fact-check the Argentinian manager, letting them know Brighton had won 5-1. Others were shocked at how he covered up the loss, commenting that they had enough of his excuses.
Check out some of the fans’ reactions:
On January 13th, Chelsea won’t face Fulham, a London rival. Despite spending over £1 billion in the past year, they currently hold the 10th position in the league. The players are criticized by many fans for poor performances, while Pochettino is also blamed by some. Goal-scoring struggles contribute significantly to their overall poor performance.
Following the Fulham match, Chelsea has the 2nd leg of the League Cup at home. Trailing 1-0, they must improve to qualify for the finals. Subsequently, they face Aston Villa in the FA Cup, posing another challenging fixture. These upcoming matches may determine Pochettino’s future at the club, amid rumors of his potential sacking.
