Morocco’s Nouhaila Benzina created history earlier this year when she played in the Women’s World Cup with her hijab. Having drawn criticism from the Western world and a French journalist who called her cultural outfit ‘regressive,’ it certainly hasn’t been easy for her. Recently EA Sports paid their tributes to the footballer who is considered a role model for many Muslim female footballers by adding her Hijab outfit to their game.
While the hijab and sport have a complex relationship, it is a move forward when a global game like FIFA accepts cultural appropriation. Morocco has been on a historic run in the current edition of the Women’s World Cup, becoming the first African nation to qualify for the knockouts. While Nouhila created history with her defensive performances, many fans were stunned as to how the Islamic Headscarf wasn’t already a part of the game.
Irrespective of FIFA’S decision to include the hijab and appease a significant part of the world supporting this culture, how accepting will they be as a whole when problems like racism, homophobia, and equal pay still remain in question? However, Benzina has showcased a strong character throughout the campaign; the sport would still benefit more if they could produce an excellent quality game for the fans over the controversy.
With the World Cup approaching the quarter-finals, it will be interesting to see which team eventually clinches the title. Benzina has indeed been hailed as an icon for the sport, which is an excellent achievement, where viewership, sponsorship, broadcasting rights, and even filling the stadiums remain problematic.
France end and demolish Nouhaila Benzina and Morocco’s historic run at the Women’s World Cup
On the eighth of August, the French National Women’s Team showcased their quality by securing an easy victory over the Moroccan team. The match was essentially over after just 23 minutes as France led the game 3-0, proving they were a level above their rivals.
The Moroccan team, however, deserves nothing but praise for their historic campaign this season. Even though they suffered massive defeats at the hands of Germany (6-0) and now France (4-0), they still did more for the game’s image than any other team. The team depicted great character throughout, becoming the first ever African Nation to qualify for the knockouts and eventually ending the campaign with their best-ever finish in the competition.
With enough arsenal at their disposal and the United States already out, could the French team go all the way? They have a mouth-watering fixture against hosts Australia next, which will decide their fate.
