During the 2023 January transfer window, Arsenal were behind Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk. They were close to signing him, but Chelsea hijacked the move and instead got the services of the winger.
Arsenal bid around €100 million for the winger, but their London rivals had also bid the same amount. The only differences were the payment schedule and the bonuses, which made his club Shakhtar Donetsk interested in the Blue’s offer. They rejected the Gunners and decided to sell their 22-year-old star to Chelsea instead.
This move to Chelsea had devastated the winger, with North London being his preferred destination. Mudryk had previously shown his appreciation for Arsenal on his social media, sharing photos of himself watching Arsenal matches. He had also praised Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, many times.
When Mudryk learnt that he was going to go to Chelsea instead of Arsenal, he was in tears. According to The Athletic, the winger was devastated by the move to Chelsea. According to Arsenal insider, Team News and Tix, the winger was on a call with Arteta on the way to the airport.
Team News and Tix reported that the winger was in tears on the call with Arteta, begging the Arsenal manager to stop the move and find a way to get him to North London. Unfortunately, he ended up signing an 8-year contract at Chelsea, earning £100k per week. Arsenal meanwhile signed Leandro Trossard from Brighton after he had a falling out with Roberto de Zerbi.
