Everybody loves a bit of drama when it comes to football. Tottenham Hotspur vs Brentford featured just that, as Neal Maupay and James Maddison got into ‘hilarious’ post-match banter after Wednesday’s game. It all started with Neal Maupay, well-known for his antics and heated reactions on the pitch, imitating James Maddison’s ‘darts’ celebration & the Tottenham squad wasn’t happy about it, to say the least.
Tottenham however, managed a turnaround thanks to 3 goals in eight minutes. Richarlison and Brennan Johnson made it clear that they hadn’t forgotten Maupay’s celebration.
Shortly after the match, Maddison called out the striker, claiming
He's not scored enough goals of his own to have his own celebration.
This was enough to make Maupay ‘retaliate’ in a similar fashion. The striker didn’t hold back in his post, which featured a picture of him and Ivan Toney celebrating with Maddison’s trademark celebration. The third slide featured a compilation from the movie ‘Oppenheimer’, where Cillian Murphy says, ‘Now I am become Death, the destroyer of Worlds’.
His caption took a brutal dig at Maddison, as it read,
Went a bit early with that one. Gutted we couldn't get the win. More goals and less relegations in my career than James Maddison.
Maddison’s response was the culmination of the banter, which saw him post slides of his teammates ‘mocking’ Maupay as they won the game 3-2. He also posted a picture of the final scoreline, making viewers think that he did in fact, manage to get the last laugh. Following the win, Tottenham are now fourth in the league table, while Brentford are three spots from the bottom.
James Maddison – Neal Maupay banter sets Twitter on fire
While James Maddison seemingly got the upper hand over Maupay, the internet has given its take. While many sided with the Tottenham midfielder, others were backing Maupay’s effort to rile up Maddison and his teammates. A fan commented that it was ‘shameless’ of Maupay to make fun of Maddison while simultaneously losing the game and also being a relegation contender.
Another pointed out how Maupay might just be having a fun time and Maddison was genuinely ‘pissed’ at the entire incident. Many laughed at how Maddison’s claim came to haunt him, as Maupay does have enough goals to ‘have his celebration’. Maupay in fact, has around thirty more career goals than Maddison. Others praised Maupay for being so good at ‘rattling’ his opponents.
Others spammed pictures of Brennan Johnson, Richarlison and Maddison ‘mocking’ the Frenchman during Tottenham celebrations. A fan even labeled the game as the ‘sh*thousery’ derby. While many made fun of Maupay’s team being 15th, others said he wasn’t as ‘shameless’ as someone who got relegated with Leicester City and jumped ship to Tottenham. Social media has been buzzing ever since the two players decided to have a go at each other.
