Ever since Raphael Varane joined Manchester United in 2021, many expected him to be one of the best signings of the season. He was touted to be the center-back to elevate the United side to the next level. Two seasons later, he’s a benchwarmer with many fans and ex-players unhappy with him.

Varane, who earns £17.68 million per year, has barely played in the current season. Despite the injuries, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans start ahead of the Frenchman. Even when he starts, there aren’t many consistent performances. Gary Neville believes Varane’s minimal game time and poor form is due to him being found out.

For his career, and he’s not the only one, I agree someone like him with the big matches and tournaments that you’d expect a lot, lot more. Something has happened, there's been a fall out, it doesn’t give me confidence. With defenders you look at if they are a first or second center back. He’s second...I think he’s been found out a bit. He’s not the dominant leader type you talk about.

He further hinted that the only reason he might be benched is due to a falling out with Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman started the defender only five times in the league, with his latest start coming against Liverpool.

Gary Neville is frustrated with Manchester United’s way of tackling the Liverpool press

Ever since Jurgen Klopp took over Liverpool, he brought his “Heavy Metal” football. One of the biggest attributes of heavy metal football is gegenpressing, an aggressive method of pressing. Many teams find it difficult to play out of a Liverpool press, often losing the ball and the Reds creating a chance.

So when Manchester United tried playing out from the back against Liverpool, Gary Neville couldn’t hold back his frustration with them. He pointed out how United’s biggest rivals were just waiting for them to play out from the back, bringing players up near the box ready to press.

...It all stems from Man United and Onana trying to play out of the back from the goal kicks which is madness. They’re asking to be pressed, Liverpool work it over to the right and they should be scoring at the back post. It’s dangerous again.

Despite their poor form, United managed to hold a goalless draw at Anfield. This is the first time they escaped with a point since January 2021. This draw has gotten Liverpool to drop down to 2nd, while the Red Devils dropped to 7th.
