New York Red Bulls’ Dante Vanzier issues apology after racist remarks during a MLS clash, gets suspended for 6 matches

New York Red Bulls forward Dante Vanzeir apologized to San Jose Earthquakes players for using a racial slur during Saturday’s Major League Soccer game between the two teams. “I want to sincerely apologize to the players of the Earthquakes,” Vanzeir said in a statement on Monday. “I will do everything I can to be part of the change that needs to happen in this sport and our world.

San Jose forward Jeremy Ebobisse previously said he heard a player make a racist remark but didn’t identify the player. He and the rest of the team continued to play following the incident because “the player who made the remark said it was not directed toward anyone in particular.” The striker has been suspended pending investigation by his club and the league, although he himself has already admitted to using the accused term.

His words led to a lengthy stoppage as referees decided whether or not to red-card Vanzeir or whether or not to continue the match. Referees gave 21 minutes of stoppage time as a result of the pause in the action. The match was not abandoned and Vanzeir played on. The Belgian was eventually substituted before the contest finished in a 1-1 draw.
