After a magnificent 2022/23 season, it is safe to say Newcastle United have had a dip in form. The Magpies qualified for the Champions League and were finalists of the League Cup. But now things are not the same.
The club currently lies in 7th in the League, out of the League Cup and Champions League, and just lost at home to Nottingham Forest. The side has 9 players out with injury and new signing Sandro Tonali is currently suspended due to his involvement in illegal betting.
After their 1-3 loss to Forest, the fans in the St. James’ Park were unhappy. A hattrick by Chris Wood lost them a crucial 3 points, and the Geordies let out their frustration by jeering the team and the manager Eddie Howe. The entire stadium “booed” the team off, which Howe didn’t appreciate.
After the match, Howe was asked about the fans, he said he appreciated the home support but the fans needed to understand that the team was going through a difficult time. He claimed the injuries hampered the team’s form, and just needed the fans to understand that.
We're on a difficult run and any expression to that I respect and understand. But the atmosphere at the stadium was good, that’s what I ask. We had so many injuries, it has been a difficult period.Eddie Howe to Amazon Prime
Newcastle have had 9 injuries this season, with important players like Joelinton, Fabian Schar, Nick Pope, and Joe Willock out. They have lost 8 out of their 19 matches so far, with only 1 away win out of 9 matches.
Kieran Trippier believes his standards have dropped
Following the Magpies’ embarrassing home loss to Nottingham Forest, Kieran Trippier did not hold back his thoughts about the team’s poor form. After being knocked out of the Champions League, and League Cup and their recent poor form in the League, the fullback claimed his standards were dropping. In his interview with Amazon Prime, he said it has been a challenge for him and the team.
It's been a challenge for the team going from not playing in Europe playing three-game weeks some players are new to that. Sometimes when you don't mean it like myself - my standards have dropped - I'm old enough and experienced to talk about my own performances and know they're nowhere near as good as the standards I've set recently.Kieran Trippier to Amazon Prime
Newcastle United have managed to win only one match since their 3-0 victory over Manchester United. Their only win was over Fulham at home. Eddie Howe and his men now have a tough time ahead of them. They have to face Liverpool at Anfield, rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup, Manchester City at home, and then Aston Villa at Villa Park.
