Nick Pope suffered a horrific injury during Newcastle United’s win over Manchester United. In the 81st minute, he awkwardly fell to the ground after trying to clear the ball away. Subsequently, the referee called for medical assistance, and 3 minutes later he was subbed off for Martin Dubravka.

At the time fans were hoping that there was nothing serious about it. However, to the dismay of many it was later revealed that he dislocated his left shoulder. More reports suggest that the English GK could be out for 4-5 months. Meaning that he would miss the majority of the season. With his Club now on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, they have kept a ‘revered’ Spanish custodian on their radars.

According to The Daily Mail, former Manchester United keeper David de Gea, is now a candidate to replace Pope. The 33-year-old has been without a club since July, as his contract with the Red Devils ran dry due to the two parties not reaching an agreement. If de Gea does join, he will battle with Dubravka to become the Magpies’ No. 1.

Newcastle United wouldn’t need to wait till January to sign him as well, as the Spaniard is a free agent. Clubs can sign free agents any time of the season as they aren’t contracted to any club. Till the Magpies don’t make any moves, Dubravka will be the first-choice keeper for Eddie Howe, with his first game coming up against Everton on Thursday night.

What are the other available options to replace Nick Pope?

With Nick Pope now confirmed to be out for 4-5 months, Eddie Howe needs to find a suitable replacement. David de Gea is one of the many players who have been shortlisted, but the market has many more keepers who look like they are up for the move.

One option is Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, who has lost his spot to loanee David Raya. He lost his spot in the 5th game in the Premier League and since then has only started against Brentford as Raya was contracted to them.

Hugo Lloris is another option. The former French Captain has been replaced by Guglielmo Vicario and has not started a single game this season. There have been rumors of him planning to leave in January and Newcastle looks like a good option, as they still have the chance of European football.

Lukasz Fabianski, the former West Ham and Arsenal keeper, has been replaced by Alphonso Areola. This season he has not made a single start and has fallen out with David Moyes, saying his demotion is disrespectful.
