North Korean state television aired footage of South Korea‘s World Cup campaign for the first time this week. People in the country could view the Round of 16 games on Wednesday from Stadium 974 in Doha, where Brazil defeated South Korea 4-1.

Korean Central Television made an extraordinary move when they announced the names of the South Korean athletes at the beginning of the game, which is uncommon as they usually avoid broadcasting any matches where a national from the Republic of Korea is competing. This state-run channel is led by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The channel tends to allow viewers to observe international sporting events, which is a rare experience for many people in the country. According to multiple reports, North Korea has broadcasted most of the World Cup games this year, except for South Korea’s matches until Wednesday. Until recently, many football matches between South Korea and Japan, including those at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, were not televised.
