The year 2023 has been bittersweet for Manchester United and their fans. They started the year by winning the Carabao Cup but as the year went on, things got worse for them. They got knocked out of the Europa League quarterfinals, lost the FA Cup final, and struggled their way to the top 4.

With the start of the new season, many expected some positive change, but things haven’t changed. They have no European football, failed to defend the Carabao Cup, and are currently 7th in the Premier League. Manchester United have just ended the year with a loss to Nottingham Forest, their first in 29 years.

The first half was nothing special, with not much action taking place. But the highlight of the half was when Raphael Varane almost scored an own goal. The 2nd half was when things started to pick up, with 3 goals and 6 yellow cards.

Forest opened the scoring in the 64th minute when Nicolas Dominguez scored after a brilliant attacking play. Marcus Rashford equalized in the 78th minute after an error by Matt Turner. The keeper tried passing the ball to a teammate, but it instead found Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine just had to pass it to Rashford, who finished it with ease.

Unfortunately for United, Morgan Gibbs-White scored the winner just 4 minutes later, who was assisted by former United winger Anthony Elanga. As the Red Devils struggled to score, the Forest fans in the stadium started chanting “sacked in the morning,” targeting Erik ten Hag. The game ended, with Gibbs-White being awarded the Man of the Match award.

Fans call for Erik ten Hag’s sacking after Manchester United lost 5th game in December

In the past few weeks, many reports suggested Ten Hag was close to getting sacked. United’s poor form, along with him losing the dressing room and trust of fans, have led to this circumstance. So when the Nottingham Forest fans started singing the chant, everyone knew they were targeting Manchester United’s manager.

Things are the same on the Internet. Many fans called for Erik Ten Hag’s sacking after the embarrassing loss. Rival fans thoroughly enjoyed United’s loss, saying it always kept them entertained.

Check out some of the fans’ reactions:

United now stand in 7th place, ahead of Brighton and Newcastle by 1 and 2 points each. Both clubs also have played one game less than United, so United could potentially drop further down the table. Ten Hag claims he still has the backing of the club and its new owners, but under the current circumstances, he could be without a job soon.
