Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has just produced an assist of the season for Olympique de Marseille after dragging both defender and goal-keeper out of goal and backheeling it for his fellow teammate, Ismaila Sarr who was quick to smash the ball in the back of the net.
Aubameyang, who joined from Chelsea this summer, capped off an incredible game against Le Havre on the weekend. Scoring in the 21st minute of the game, the talking point, however, is the incredible backheel assist he provided for his Senegalese teammate, Ismaila Sarr ending the game 3-0 in Marseille’s favor. This marks the club’s first win since the 26th of August.
After a difficult year with Chelsea last season, Aubameyang has found his new home in the city of Marseille. The Gabonese International made the transfer this summer after leaving the London side on a free. A 3-year contract will see the player at the French Club till 2026. Like his goalscoring past at Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, Auba, 34, has continued in his ways scoring over 5 goals and providing 3 assists in 12 appearances for the club in all competitions.
The Gabonese is known for his exciting style of play, quick pace, and great finishing. He will now bring his experience to Marseille who will look to build off of last season after failing to qualify for the Champions League this season.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Chelsea spell was poor
Aubameyang’s short spell at FC Barcelona showcased to clubs around Europe that the Gabonese International could still play at the top level of football. €12 million was the transfer fee agreed between FC Barcelona and Chelsea for the services of the ex-Arsenal star. Chelsea had been looking for a No.9 and with the debacle with Romelu Lukaku, Aubameyang was to be their answer.
The transfer, however, did not turn out well for both parties. Auba managed 3 goals and 1 assist in over 21 appearances for the club. Fans complained that the player was lazy and did not do enough work off the ball. Auba has also since then hit back at the club’s management stating, “Because I arrived at Chelsea in no small part due to Thomas Tuchel, and a week later, he had been sacked.”
Auba, now 34, will remain at French side Marseille till the age of 37 after which football fans will be curious to see if the player decides to hang up his boots or make one last transfer elsewhere.
