Paul Merson feels Harry Maguire is made a “scapegoat” to overshadow Manchester United’s failures, questions his absence in the match against Arsenal
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Paul Merson accused Ralf Rangnick of making Harry Maguire a “scapegoat” by leaving him on the bench in the clash at Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Harry Maguire has had the worst season after he was made the target of all the failures that the Red Devils had faced in the season so far.
According to Merson, Rangnick made Maguire a “scapegoat” and claimed that his “torrid week” is the reason for resting him on the sideline in the clash against Arsenal.
“Sometimes you want to get out on the pitch and play football. You want to get out there. That’s your solitude, as soon as you cross that white line, you concentrate as a professional footballer. I found that myself, and I think Harry Maguire would rather play football,” said Merson.
“He’s been made a bit of a scapegoat if I’m being honest. You could have dropped every single player from the other night against Liverpool. For me, he’ll be disappointed”, added Merson after Maguire was left on the bench against Arsenal.
Harry Maguire had recently undergone a horrific bomb threat on him and his family after his terrible performance against Liverpool which saw them lose 4-0 at Anfield in the midweek clash. Eventually, Rangnick didn’t start him in the match against Arsenal which might have left the side’s first-choice captain disappointed.
Manchester United faces another loss as they go down against Arsenal 3-1
Manchester United faced their 10th loss of the Premier League 2021-22 season as they were beaten by Arsenal on Saturday. Arsenal won 3-1 with Ronaldo scoring the only goal for the Red Devils.
Bruno Fernandez missed from the spot although Ronaldo was present who is the usual penalty-taker. They are left behind in the sixth spot with four games in hand as it might have ended their dream of qualifying for the champions league next season.
