Paul Mullin, the star striker of Wrexham, has come forward to defend Megan Rapinoe and the rest of the USWNT. After their penalty shootout defeat during the Women’s World Cup. The USWNT was eliminated in the last-16 stage by Sweden, with Rapinoe one of three players missing critical penalties in the shootout.

Mullin expressed his support for the players that braved the high-pressure penalty shootout situation at a global competition. Writing for the Athletic, he further stressed the bravery and courage to stand up in such situations. Mentioning that even renowned players such as Lionel Messi had missed penalties over their careers.

“I remember being asked about that miss [for Wrexham against Sheffield United] afterward. I said if Lionel Messi, the greatest player to grace our game, can miss penalties, then of course I can. Missing is part of the game. And missing on the world stage is something no player will feel proud of at the moment. But they had to be there to miss them,” he stated.

The early exit of the USWNT and Megan Rapinoe’s antics in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 has left fans disappointed. The two defending champions were eliminated in the Round of 16 stage by the underdog Sweden. What added fuel to fans’ anger was Rapinoe’s penalty miss and the smile afterward. Since then the retired American player has been going back-and-forth at all the hate she has been receiving. However, there are people who have come out in support of her.

Paul Mullin’s defense of the USWNT comes as he recovers from a punctured lung sustained during Wrexham’s pre-season tour of America. Mullin has returned to Wales to continue his treatment after receiving rehabilitation at the home of Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney in Los Angeles.

In a world where sportsmen are frequently judged based on their ability to perform under pressure, Mullin’s words remind every fan that even the most successful players can go through highs and lows in a beautiful game.
