“It’s criminal, “Paul Scholes blasts Lisandro Martinez’s defending during Manchester United 7-0 humiliation against Liverpool
Lisandro Martinez's defending gets called out as 'criminal' by Paul Scholes
Paul Scholes has accused Manchester United’s centre-back Lisandro Martinez of obstructing goalkeeper David de Gea’s view during the build-up to Liverpool’s first goal on Sunday. This allowed Cody Gakpo to score a stunning strike into the back of the net.
Liverpool only scored one goal in the first half but managed to score six more in the second half, resulting in their largest-ever win against their arch-rivals. The goal came in at the 43rd minute, very late in the first half. It gave a boost to the Liverpool players just before the break, leaving the Manchester United players disappointed.
Scholes, a former Manchester United midfielder who won numerous titles, criticized Martinez’s defending in the lead-up to the first goal, describing it as “criminal”. Andy Robertson passed a beautifully weighted pass to Cody Gakpo before powerfully finishing into the bottom corner of the net. Martinez’s presence in front of the Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was heavily accused by the United legend. He thinks that the defender must have faith in his goalkeeper as Red Devils legend tells the defender to ‘trust his goalkeeper’.
Martinez has been one of the Premier League’s best defenders this season but along with his other United teammates was humiliated at Anfield, with Scholes insisting the defender’s positioning as Gakpo struck the ball was all wrong.
What Scholes said about Lisandro Martinez
Paul Scholes clearly quoted a lot of things at the end of the 1st half. He said, “I certainly don’t think it helps De Gea. I don’t think he’s quite in line at the point it’s kicked but David can also think the ball might hit him. You see David’s reaction there towards Martinez, he doesn’t quite have a go at him, but I think he should do. He needs to trust his goalkeeper. This is a top goalkeeper we’re talking about, do not get in his way. If anybody gets in the goalkeeper’s way it’s criminal.”
United manager Erik ten Hag criticized his players for their unprofessional behavior as they lost their composure against their rivals. Ten Hag has been a wily tactician this season but their performance at Anfield left a lot to be desired.

Eric Ten Hag on his side’s humiliation at Anfield
Eric Ten Hag was furious and disappointed on his boys’ performance last Sunday. He took a dig at his players and stated, “You can lose a game but not in this way. Also, the second half is… unprofessional that is not Manchester United. It can’t happen, we have to talk about it. I saw 11 individuals losing their heads. This was not Manchester United”.
After an excellent season that saw them win their first major trophy in six years by defeating Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final, Manchester United’s poor performance came as a surprise. They will need to win their upcoming Europa League Round-of-16 match against Real Betis to keep their hopes of winning more silverware alive and improve the team’s morale.
