“Thank you for making us smile my friend; Legend”- Pele, LeBron James, and others garner love on Cristiano Ronaldo’s emotional post after 2022 FIFA World Cup exit
Cristiano Ronaldo posted a lengthy statement on Instagram less than 24 hours after Morocco knocked Portugal out of the 2022 World Cup. In what is very certainly going to be his final World Cup campaign, Ronaldo struck an emotional figure as he walked straight down the tunnel in tears after seeing his dream come to an end.
While other teammates, like Pepe and Bruno Fernandes, took aim at the referee and tried to accept the outcome, the 37-year-old remained silent to the press in the mixed zone. However, having been benched for their two knockout games, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has now turned to social media to share his opinion of their World Cup failure.
Ronaldo wrote about his time with the Portuguese National team which ended how he hadn’t expected. Winning the World Cup with Portugal would have been a monumental feat that Ronaldo wanted to achieve but couldn’t. He fought for his dream of winning football’s premier competition in 5 consecutive World Cups; the closest he could guide his team was Quarterfinals on two occasions.
In less than an hour, Ronaldo’s Instagram post garnered more than 7 million likes. Many well-known personalities, including Pele, Jamie Foxx, former Manchester United teammate Garnacho and LeBron James, also commented on it. Brazilian legend Pele replied: “Thank you for making us smile my friend”. NBA icon James added: “LEGEND!!”. Kylian Mbappe, who could win his second World Cup with France, also expressed admiration for his ‘childhood idol’ with emoji of crown and GOAT.
