Pep Guardiola was clear when he said, “If we did it we are dead.”Chelsea have spent close to £1 billion pounds since the arrival of American businessman, Todd Boehly. Manchester Citymanager, Pep Guardiola believes that he would come under great scrutiny. If they were to spend the same amount of money as the London Club.
Guardiola’s big money signing this season Josep Gvardiol cost the club £77.5m pounds. Chelsea have already crossed the £100m mark with their acquisition of Brighton midfielder Moisés Caicedo. No other club has spent more money than Chelsea since the arrival of their new owner who aims to bring success to the club with their exorbitant spending.
Many fans have pointed out that Guardiola was, indeed, incorrect. Chelsea are being heavily criticized for their spending. Spending close to half a billion pounds in the 22/23 season, the Blues ended the football season with one of their worst performances since money started pouring into the club. Many media outlets heavily criticized the spending, showing sympathy for any manager who would have to come and figure out the mess at Chelsea.

Some fans argue that Pep Guardiola‘s comments in the press conference were tone-deaf. Man City are facing 115 suspected breaches of the top flight’s financial rules ranging from the 09/10-17/18 season. Fans are quick to point out their charges whenever the club succeeds in any tournament. Premier League‘s spending on players has only increased over time. Last season saw the Premier League teams spend a total of £2.8bn pounds. No domestic league has ever reached those numbers.
Clubs around Europe have a season ticket system in place allowing fans to watch their home teams play in their stadium for a price. These tickets however will not cover any domestic cup games, league cup games, or even European games. All foods and drinks will also still have to be paid for. Accessories sold at the club store will also have to be paid for separately.
If fans support a team from the Premier League, luck may not be on their side as most clubs have inflated the price of their average tickets. Only 3 clubs have chosen not to increase their prices. The most shocking price is for the London club, Fulham. A season ticket will set you back £3,000 pounds. With more and more money being spent by the clubs, football is turning into a luxury rather than what it started as. The working man’s game.
