Piers Morgan takes a sly dig at Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after Cristiano Ronaldo‘s scored a hattrick for Al-Nassr. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 63rd career hat trick against Al-Fateh in the Saudi Arabian League. The journalist was quick to share his thoughts on the game via his Twitter handle, “As ⁦Cristiano scores 3 goals & provides a brilliant assist for Mane, whilst looking fitter & hungrier than ever, a reminder that Erik ‘I’m a genius, just ask me’ Ten Hag deemed him surplus to requirements for a Manchester United team which can’t hit a barn door.”

Piers Morgan’s tweet refers to the tumultuous way in which Cristiano Ronaldo departed Manchester United in his 2nd stint at the club. Ronaldo enjoyed a decent first season at the club scoring 18 in 30 games in the Premier League. With the arrival of Erik ten Hag, things changed for the Portuguese striker. With reduced minutes, and being asked to surplus to requirements, the striker felt disrespected. Things further boiled over when Ronaldo refused to come off the bench against Tottenham in the dying moments of the game.

On the 19th of November’22, the ‘Piers Morgan Uncensored‘ YouTube channel released a two-part interview with Cristiano Ronaldo. He spoke and answered on various topics. His admiration for Lionel Messi, almost signing for Manchester City only to be stopped by Sir Alex Ferguson, and how he almost joined Arsenal instead of United early on in his career. Ronaldo’s criticism of Manchester United’s management and infrastructure, along with issues with the manager and some young players’ work ethic, led to the end of his relationship with the club.

The interview made any chance of reconciliation impossible. Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United came to a joint agreement to have his contract terminated with immediate effect.

Manchester United haven’t done too badly since Ronaldo’s departure. With the likes of Lisandro Martínez and Casemiro joining the team, they were able to play a much better quality of football. Young players such as Alejandro Garnacho found success coming off the bench when the team needed him. Marcus Rashford had a great season by his own standards scoring 30 goals in all competitions. The English forward would grab games by the scruff of the neck.

Erik ten Hag had made United fun to watch after a forgettable decade for the United supporters. Fans were excited about match-day rather than dreading watching their team play slow-boring football or low-quality football. Fans even applauded the Dutch gaffer for dealing with the Ronaldo situation in a swift manner.

The Red Devils who have begun their season slowly will be hoping they can turn things around.
