Nottingham Forest defender Harry Toffolo has been suspended for five months and fined for breaching the FA’s betting rules. The 28-year-old defender faced charges at Norwich City when he was on loan from Swindon Town, Rotherham, and Scunthorpe United. Toffolo confessed to over 370 charges and was fined £20,956 ($26,165).
The FA’s rule E1 (B) explicitly prohibited players from betting on all forms and even sharing information that could be used for the same purposes. However, Toffolo is still available for Forest’s selection, as he has yet to feature in the Premier League.
Toffolo’s case is the recent high-profile case of another top-flight footballer caught in betting after Brentford footballer Ivan Toney. He was banned for eight months and fined £50,000 ($62,417) for admitting to 232 breaches.
Toney might return to Brentford next week after dropping hints of a potential move away. However, the recent betting problems have highlighted how the integrity of the sport is at stake and lies in the hands of the authority to make the rules stricter.
Forest player Jesse Lingard trains with West Ham
Jesse Lingard’s future in football has been a subject of interest since his departure from Nottingham Forest. He struggled to make an impact in the Premier League. Lingard enjoyed a successful loan stint at West Ham United during the 2020-21 season. He has been training with the Hammers recently.
This development has sparked speculation about the possibility of a reunion between Lingard and the London-based club. During his previous loan spell at West Ham, Lingard showcased his quality. He scored nine goals in just 16 Premier League appearances. His contributions played a crucial role in the club’s qualification for the Europa League, earning him admiration from fans and managers alike.
With Lingard back in training and improving his fitness, West Ham manager David Moyes appears open to offering him another opportunity at the club. Moyes’ willingness to assess Lingard’s progress and provide him with an opportunity highlights the potential for a revival in the player’s career in the Premier League, should the two parties decide to move forward together.
