Clubs respecting the religious beliefs and practices of their players is no new phenomenon in the Premier League. Time and again, clubs allow their players to break their fast mid-game by pausing play. Players of Muslim faith observe Ramadan by not drinking or eating between daylight hours. The Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Everton garnered attention as play was stopped in the 20th minute.
Fans quickly took to social media to commend the decision made by the League, as they shared pictures of Everton players breaking their fast. The trio of Idrissa Gueye, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Amadou Onana were seen huddled together on the touchline, on their knees as they broke their day-long fast.
Play has similarly been stopped mid-game between Aston Villa and Wolves to allow two of their players to break their fast by consuming food and drink as well. Fans and journalists alike were impressed by the League’s decision to respect the players’ religious beliefs and allow them the time to break their fast.
As for the game itself, either side shared the spoils as goals from Alexander Isak and Dominic Calvert-Lewin saw the game end 1-1.
Fans praise Premier League for pausing game as Everton bag late draw against Newcastle
As the Premier League enters the final stretch of games, every win counts as clubs battle it out for precious points. While Newcastle United were 8th prior to the game on Tuesday night, Everton were battling relegation at 16th. An early goal from Alexander Isak brought the game to life as he picked up the ball behind the Everton backline before dribbling through the defense and beating Jordan Pickford from close range.
A fan commented that the Premier League leads the way when it comes to including and respecting religious beliefs. Many praised the League for its decision while others said that it was beautiful to see the game being stopped for the Muslim players. Many said that it was only fitting that the Premier League was the best competition in the world and that they set the model for other Leagues.
A fan said that the gesture was a class act from the Premier League even though this is not the first time a game is being stopped for similar reasons. Some however, are of the opinion that it had to be done after the game or at half-time so that it didn’t interfere with the flow of play.
That being said, either side picked up a point from the game as Everton found a way back into the game. Calvert-Lewin stepped up from the spot, and despite Martin Dúbravka getting a hand to his shot, saw the strike bulge into the roof of the net.
