The table toppers, Manchester City, face their modern rivals, Liverpool, at the Etihad Stadium on the 25th of November. The two teams occupy the top two spots of the Premier League points table but are divided by only one point.
The two sides have shared an intense rivalry for the past few seasons, with City winning 5 out of the 6 previous titles while Liverpool won in 2020. Despite the massive difference in titles won, Liverpool did challenge the Manchester-based team, with there being only a point difference in the 2018/19 season and 2021/22 season.
Both teams’ managers, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp also share a rivalry, which they brought from their time in the Bundesliga. Guardiola managed Bayern Munich, while Klopp managed their biggest rivals, Borussia Dortmund. The two faced each other 8 times during their time in Germany, with both each winning 4 matches each. The two acknowledge their rivalry, with Guardiola calling it a “beautiful rivalry.”
Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League 2023/24 season so far
Manchester City bought 4 new additions to their Treble-winning side, as stars Ilkay Gundogan, Riyad Mahrez, and young Cole Palmer left the side. They purchased Josko Gvardiol, Matheus Nunes, Jeremy Doku, and Matteo Kovacic as replacements.
City top the league, winning 9, losing 2, and have drawn 1. They started off well, winning their first 6 matches of the season with ease, but their winning run was stopped by Gary O’Neil’s Wolves who beat them 2-1. They lost the very next game against rivals Arsenal, which is managed by Guradiola’s former assistant manager Mikel Arteta. Since then they have beaten Brighton 2-1, Manchester United 0-3, and Bournemouth 6-1. Their last match before the international break came against Chelsea, which ended up being a goal fest with both sides scoring 4. They currently stand at the top, with 28 points.
Liverpool had a below-average 22/23 season, finishing 5th and missing out on Champions League football. They had to revamp their entire midfield after losing Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. They brought in Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch in the 2023 Summer window.
Liverpool won 6 out of their first 7 games before losing to Tottenham Hotspurs, which was one of the most controversial matches of the season. Since then they have won three and drawn 2, getting them just one point below their rivals.

Manchester City have lost Nunes, Nathan Ake, Kevin de Bruyne, and John Stones to injury, but does have the squad depth for them. Ederson and Erling Haaland might miss out as they pulled out of national duty with foot and ankle injuries, although the Haaland injury isn’t as serious as it seems.
Liverpool stars Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez suffered knocks during their international matches, but look fit to play. Andy Robertson dislocated his shoulder in October while representing Scotland and just underwent surgery, so he will miss out.

Manchester City vs Liverpool: Match prediction
This match, just like all previous Liverpool-City fixtures, is bound to be a blockbuster. Two teams that play great football while also having just a point difference will ensure fans enjoy the match.
Although City is at the top of the table, their recent draw against Chelsea is concerning and Klopp has certainly studied that match to see their rival’s weaknesses. Meanwhile, Liverpool have been the best defensive side in the league, but they do face City with the most goals scored.
