Premier League postpones weekend matches following Queen Elizabeth II’s demise

Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the Premier League cancelled its whole slate of weekend games, stating that it did so “as a gesture of respect” for a monarch who had been “an inspiration.” After speaking with government representatives, the league at 11:30 BST released a statement announcing the postponements.

It read: “At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.”

The weekend schedule was originally set to begin with Fulham’s matchup against Chelsea at home on Saturday and end with Leeds United’s match with Nottingham Forest at Elland Road on Monday. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.

“As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication. This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”

All football activities including Premier League has been postponed this week

The EFL, which oversees the Championship, League One, and League Two in England, also announced the rescheduling of their games before confirming the complete suspension of all football. From September 9 to September 11, all games in England will be postponed, according to the Football Association (FA).

The FA said: “As a mark of respect, following the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, English football has united to postpone all football fixtures between 9-11 September.” It said the Queen had “left a lasting and indelible legacy on our national game”. It said this applied all the way down to the grassroots level.
